house snippets

If you’ve been reading for a while, you’ll know that about seven months ago, we moved into a new house – it was rented, and to cut a long story short, was in a bit of a state. Previous tenants hadn’t treated it very well, and even though we haven’t bought it, we’re giving it a bit of love and attention. Our landlords are ace, and have pretty much given us free reign, so the only restrictions are our meagre budgets – which is why I still haven’t been able to do a proper house tour (despite me saying continuously that I will). We’ve put down some new flooring, but need to do some bits in the kitchen and bathroom (plastering over artex, ugh, and a new worktop. And numerous things with fabric and paint to disguise other ugliness that we can’t afford to change…), so for now I’ve just photographed a few corners of our new home. Obviously, as we are a real family, the piles of mess were kicked aside with my foot – I’m not going to pretend that we live in some pristine Pinterest pad, what would be the point? I don’t really have a design theme, or colour scheme, or anything – I like crafts, and books and old things and…. stuff. The husband says he feels like he lives in a charity shop – not a bad thing in my eyes.

I love to see inside other peoples homes. I am very jealous of you being able to get a beautiful mirror up – I cannot get a thing in our walls – well nothing that would be able to hold a mirror that heavy. I am always seeing them at carboots for pence and can never buy them. WAAAAAAAAAAH!

I spy two of my favourite things: a teapot from my youth (pic 8) and Expedit? (so brilliant for display). A lovely individual home xo

Yes! I get it. I love EVERYTHING just so long as I like it. I don't do colour schemes or styles as I couldn't possibly narrow myself down. Eclectic doesn't cover it.I think your pictures show your house to be beautiful but so interesting too. I'm fed up of looking at the same things everywhere with hardly anyone daring to express themselves and what they actually do like rather than what they feel they should like. I's so easy to be sucked in by that. There are so many blogs that just list daily all the stuff they bought and then everyone jots down where they got it and runs of to get the same.Even with crafts there is the cloning thing going on. No one seems to trust their own colour and pattern choices any more. In so many ways the internet has opened up the world of making things to people but it has also closed down many people' unique sense of art that is different from anyone else.Nice things can be new or old, hand made or made in a factory but I do like them to be something that makes me feel something. So many of the objects in your home have a story – how they were made, how they belonged to, who made them and what made you like them. That beats the Molly makes type of stuff or the Country Living (most of us live in cities!) aspirations hands down for me.Nice post, thank you.

I love the way you showcase fabrics in your home. Our walls are still far too blank but am hoping to do some DIY over the xmas period (ie make the mister stick some pictures up finally).Lovely post x
